Wanted: A Desk

As a magazine writer, I often work from home. Mostly I prop myself up on my bed and write in this really awkward, hunched over position (like right now, in fact), which is definitely not awesome for my back. I've realized that I have to get a desk, both to save on future chiropractic bills and to get off my bed. :) How much do you love this simple bright work space via Desire to Inspire? I also really like this wire chair, which Grace (of Design Sponge fame) had at her old office. Any other chair/desk/workspace tips, my dear readers?

  1. I've been longing to set up a new workspace, too.
I'm thinking of going with a taller counter style rather than a desk, though.
That way I could sit on a nice comfy stool if I'm going to be working for a while or if I just need to check my email right quick, I could stand (without having to bend over).
Somehow I always feel like I get more accomplished when I'm standing anyway.
    So that's my plan!

  2. standing--that's a brilliant idea. it's such a drag to be sitting all day.

  4. They have some great office spaces being advertised online at DWR these days. Some are a little too out there and modern for me but it's still good inspiration to look at what they have to offer.

  5. i love countertop height desks. they're great for doing design work, and there's nothing like a swivel stool to keep it fun!

i have a super narrow tiny desk in my office, and it's a great help because i'm forced to keep the clutter level down.

  7. I'm clearly allergic to html today:

Search for "basis" on the Room and Board site if you're curious...

  10. I have an Eames chair, but definitely wouldn't recommend it for your desk chair. Definitely get a cushy one, with wheels. Wheels are key. You will hate your set up if you don't have wheels.

  12. i found that if i put some brilliant art above my desk, i'm more prone to actually work there. (like you, i'm usually splayed on the couch or elsewhere). today, my order of animal prints from www.berkleyillustration.etsy.com arrived and i can't wait to put them in my workspace!

  14. Hi Joanna,

    I'm a fellow work-at-home freelance writer.

Here's a post I did awhile back on some office-chair contenders:

I'm still looking for the perfect chair -- something good-looking, comfortable and ergonomic, and affordable ...

    All the best,

    Leah

  15. that is one sexy little desk space..

I've also been thinking about desks a lot lately, because I will soon have to move to a smaller desk at work (a sort of desk demotion that followed a great pay promotion...go figure) Anyway to reward myself for not being a total brat about the situation(at least not in front of the bosses), I've decided to reward myself with a really well done workspace...

  16. Finding the right desk and chair is such a chore! I think I tried (ie. sat on the chair and then pretended to write/work on an imaginary laptop) at so many stores! Finally picked up something very diff from regular 'work' tables, and it has been a steady 'laptop+tea' companion for 4 weeks now... :-)
(will send you a pic of my prized table!)
    Hope you find yours soon!
