This spring, there's a new trend in town: The middle part. Here are some photos...
The middle part can look tousled and laid-back...
...or sleek and sexy.

But most of all, it makes me think of the 1968 movie Romeo & Juliet starring the fresh-faced beauty Olivia Hussey (my first-ever girl crush). It was my favorite movie when I was growing up. Have you ever seen it? Look how breathtakingly beautiful she looks with a middle part...
...even in behind-the-scenes photos. :)So, the big question is: Do you like the middle part? Do or don't? Will you be parting your hair this summer? xo
P.S. The hair product that changed my life...

I do part my hair but to the side. I think it depends on the face shape and such. Whenever I part my hair down the middle, I start looking like Morticia!
ReplyDeleteit's a long time i don't part my hair so this summer i will!
ReplyDelete;)

I do like Gyneth's middle part. She has just the face for it. I wore mine with a middle part all through high school, but then somewhere along the line changed to a side part. Olivia Hussey is gorgeous. I think with long hair straight hair it works well. I am always struggling to find a style that looks good, but doesn't take too much work!
ReplyDeleteOh, these pictures from Romeo and Juliet take me back! gorgeous. I like a middle part when you can make it work.
ReplyDeletei tried the middle part for a little while last summer, and i just don't have the forehead for it. so i added bangs, with a middle part. just making the trends work for me! :)
ReplyDeleteI used to hate it, but my hairstylist just showed me how to make a baby part and tease the crown for a Brigitte Bardot look!
ReplyDeleteI love a middle part. Olivia Palermo is another one who does this really well--her hair always looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteI think you need to have a really pretty face for it to work.
ReplyDeleteI love the middle part look but it really does depend on your face shape on how good it looks or not on yourself.
ReplyDeleteI was a middle part devotee for most of my childhood/teenage years. Now that I'm in my twenties, I've finally realized that a side part is a much better look for me. I read somewhere that middle parts look best of people with very symmetrical features, and I think that it is true!
ReplyDeletei have shortish hair with middle part just at the front and then tousled further back.
ReplyDeletei wore a middle part until i figured out that a side part is much more flattering to my face shape. these photos are all lovely examples of ladies that it works for though!
ReplyDeleteI love the middle part! I started doing it as I was growing out my bangs so I wouldn't have too much bulk on one side, and I haven't stopped since!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a "do"! It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's fun for a change! xoxo, morgan
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a middle part since middle school! But! I have been growing my bangs out since last summer to try and see if I can pull off a middle part after seeing so many beautiful ladies pulling it off so efforlessly. :) :) So funny you did this post (and great!) because I just had a long conversation with my sister AND husband about middle parts. haha!
ReplyDeleteLaura--Olivia Palermo totally inspired me to retake middle parts too. She always makes it look so chic! I've been trying it a couple of times this spring break too. Great post!
ReplyDeletemiddle parts are a total DO for women with round or heart-shaped faces. sadly, it elongates my narrow face even more, so it's a big fat NO for me.
ReplyDeleteI love a middle part, but it can be hard with curly hair. Though when it works it looks great, straight or curly
ReplyDeleteI loved that version of Romeo & Juliet!
ReplyDeleteAs for the middle part, I think it looks great on folks with long hair. Alas, I am a short haired folk, so side part for me!
my hair does not aloud it ;-)
ReplyDeleteI will have to repeat myself: Why does Eva Mendes has to look gorgeous with anything she wears????
You HAVE to have straight hair for this to work. When this trend starting a year or so ago, I tried to rock it. Big disaster. I have naturally curly hair and it made me have major triangle head. Only a choice few can pull this off. I will be sticking with my boring side part. Le sigh.
ReplyDeleteI actually LOVE the middle part. Some people can pull it off really well. I however...cannot! haha
ReplyDeleteI fried my hair when I tried to force a side part for many years. It's so bad I have to cover it (a la Meg in Little Women) with a middle part. I don't like it on me as much, but it does elongate my round face a bit, which makes me look older but in a good way.
ReplyDeleteI have tried the middle part and even though others like it, I just feel strange... kinda like when I wear a braid :) I just feel silly for some reason. I really need to step outside of the box though!!
ReplyDeleteOlivia Hussey was my first girl crush too! I watched Romeo and Juliet over and over. It was so romantic and she was so beautiful. Yay to middle parts! Although tricky if you have a widows peak like I do. xox

ReplyDeleteI love these photos (especially Juliet!)...but I look best with a side part. I look SO young with a middle part. Like a kid. :)
ReplyDeleteA side part has always suited me better, but I do like to experiment and the middle part is cute too :)
ReplyDeletei love the way it looks, but can't pull it off (face shape too long). i agree you have to have a really feminine, pretty face to pull it off.
ReplyDeletei used to wear a middle part in high school and my mom would tell me i looked like john lennon (i'm not a guy, by the way!).
I thought I liked a middle part on myself until I saw a recent picture and I realized I looked less like Eva Mendes and more like Meg from Family Guy. Not so flattering on me :)
ReplyDeleteA do-do-do!!! it makes faces look slimmer and more feminine. and as im blessed with cheeks that made me look 10lb more then i am - its a must for me! plus, its more convenient , the hair is not in your face as it falls all the time from the side part.

I do when Im feeling extra skinny and my skin is flawless and my makeup is perfect and i love my outfit. But that is only like once a month ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing JO!

I looove middle parts, especially when hair is tousled and wavy, like the Eva and Rosy in these pictures. I would opt for a side part if hair is too straight, it looks a little...matronly. Side parts look wicked cute with pin straight hair. I have bangs, so I have what I like to call a "half-part", hahaha.
ReplyDeleteA middle part is pretty classic, I think. But I'm finding I like to have slightly sideswept bangs to soften my look. By the way, funny photos of Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting messing around on the R&J set!
ReplyDeleteI am loving the trend and was totally playing with it the other night! You have to rock it with confidence, though, and when you do - it looks stunning.
ReplyDeleteMuch love,
B
I think a middle part looks great and modern with volumized waves, like Drew Barrymore in this photo http://en.gtwallpaper.com/fondecran/drew_barrymore/drew_barrymore_17.jpg
ReplyDeleteI DO part mine down the middle. But that's because I have a super sleek black 1920's bob. One day I woke up, looked in the morror, and said, "why not?". Now I LOVE having the part down the middle!
ReplyDeleteSarah

I love it, husband hated it! So i got bangs!
ReplyDeletehttp://gandacummings.blogspot.com
LOVE the middle part. I use to do it and then switched to the side. But now when I try to switch back to the middle it just doesn't look the same.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes middle part my hair when its curly, I don't usually part it in the middle when its straight unless I plan to do a half up bardot pony and I need to tame my colic. I like it with a little volume though.
ReplyDeleteI already do rock a middle part! love it!
ReplyDeleteI love a center part!
ReplyDeleteI actually ask my stylist to cut long, layered bangs that can work both ways. I can do a left side part with a serious swoop OR part straight down the middle. Double win!
www.ladeedahkab.blogspot.com
Totally depends on the lady!! I don't like it on me so I always do a side one!
ReplyDeleteLemanie's Randomness Blog
my sister visited me over the christmas holiday and made me change my part from side to middle. she said, "trust me. it's gonna be big soon." i seriously think it has changed my look so much for the better! who knew?!
ReplyDeleteI had been parting my hair on one side for years and got worried about thinning, so I've been switching it up with parting on the other side as well as in the middle. After I wore it in the middle a couple times, I got used to it, and like it. I think it's one of those things where you get so used to how you look a certain way that the centre part just looks weird. But the centre part was in for a long time, and everyone was doing it, and used to the look. We all got used to the look of skinny jeans too :)
ReplyDeleteMy natural part is straight down the middle, and I've fought it since middle school. Maybe I'll embrace it this summer :)
ReplyDeletei've always loved the middle part, but i have a prominent widow's peak, so it does not look so cute on me. but i say it's a definite DO. so retro. :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely not I look AWFUL with a middle part. It elongates my face to the degree of death. YUCK.
ReplyDeleteI tried parting my hair in the middle a while ago to see what it looked like, and it was basically Dwight Schrute looking back at me in the mirror. In related news, I already know what I'm going to be for Halloween this year.
ReplyDeleteAs others have noted, it really depends.
ReplyDeleteYou've shown some good examples of people that can rock the middle part though.
I'm a middle part girl - as my Twitter pic shows :)
ReplyDeletemy hair naturally parts in the middle so i don't get the choice of where to split it... either way, work it!
ReplyDeleteI happen to love the middle part, but it can be severe. It highlights imperfections (aka wrinkles, eek!) so embrace the middle part when you are young! And invest in a good wrinkle creme :-)
ReplyDeletehttp://cuphalffull-sf.blogspot.com/
Yes! Definitely a do! I like the middle part when I have longer hair. Not so much now that I've chopped off inches.
ReplyDeletei started wearing a middle part about a year when i had a baby and couldn't maintain the bangs anymore. I gotta say, i love it. i give it a little wavy texture and it looks effortless and feminine. excited about this new trend!
ReplyDeleteI try rocking a middle part whenever I wear my hair in loose curls, but I can never keep a "sleek" style, it always has to be go-with-the-flow (I play with hair constantly.) so somehow, my middle part always ends up to the side by the end of the day!
ReplyDeleteI used to... I haven't since the permed-hair days... yikes! It scared me off but these pics make me want to reconsider.
ReplyDeleteA cowlick forces my hair in the middle.....oh how I dream of a sweeping bang and a deep side part. No way. My cowlick is nasty.
ReplyDeleteLove a middle part, just not on me...I think some bone structures can pull it off beautifully, and others need a side part. If I do the tousled look I can sort of work it:)
ReplyDeleteive given up being subjected to frustrating hair issues and let it be! it does what it wants and that sometimes means down the middle or just off center.... its a curly-wacy mop of madness and ive learned to love it!
ReplyDeleteI've tried parting my hair in the middle, but my bangs make it look gloriously mullet-y. I need to grow them out before I can part through the middle.
ReplyDeletetheframedlady.com
Reminds me of Cher. I like it...Good for accentuating cheek bones. But sadly, my hair will not cooperate. Going to check out your magic hair product maybe it will help.
ReplyDeleteI have a super annoying cowlick right in the middle of my forehead, so I can ONLY part my hair in the middle. I also can't have bangs. Boooooo.
ReplyDeleteI have always been one to do the middle part. Mostly because that's how I straighten my hair so that's how it falls! I dig it :)
ReplyDeletePeace and Well Wishes,

middle part is such a do! especially when the rest of the hair is a little kinky and bouncy, not too pin straight (too 70s)
ReplyDeletein dramatic fashion
A trend? When did women stop wearing middle parts?
ReplyDeleteIs this new in NYC? Though still trendy, up here in western Canada the trend has been back for a few years... at least among the trendy girls I know =)
ReplyDeleteThe bangs can definitely be a saving grace for the middle part! I have straight hair, but a huge forehead. When I grew out my bangs last Christmas to try and pull this look off... it wasn't pretty. with thick Zooey Deschanel-ish bangs, however, it is much more manageable!
Any thoughts on the centre part with ombre colour photo? I am loving the ombre trend but am nervous to try it with my straight hair!
I don't know why but this hair style makes my nose look bigger
ReplyDeletehttp://girlynote.blogspot.com/
If I part my hair in the middle, I look like Zac Hanson circa 1997. So I try to avoid it as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Olsen twin movies. Ashley used to always rock the middle part, while Mary Kate donned the side part. But even when they switched it up as a test in Passport to Paris, their French beaus could still tell who was who. That's how you know it is true love.
Ugh, I always want to do the middle part, but my forehead won't let me.
ReplyDeletelike some said, i hadn't used middle part since middle school but a few years ago i rediscovered it and i use it a lot now. it seems so sexy with long hair, that i now have, and i think it's all about styling some waves or a little body/volume to the hair so we don't look like gradeschooler ha ha ha. I really do love a good middle part and i try to change it up every two days with a side part or sleeked back.
ReplyDeletei really really think you should try it, joanna, you'd look very sexy.
i LOVE middle parts- i always rock them.. must be the california in me..
ReplyDeleteand yes, i watched romeo and juliet in a philosophy of art class.. we compared it with the new version... crazy how different they are!
I think Olivia Hussey was my first ever girl crush too. I remember watching her in Romeo & Juliet in my English class back when I was at school and thinking how beautiful she was.
ReplyDeleteI have just started wearing my hair in a centre parting after a lifetime of parting it to one side!
My hairdresser gave me a middle part in December. I'm still working out how to make it work. Some days it's great, some days it just wants to hang in front of my eyes and be boring.
ReplyDeleteIt's been fun rocking something different (I've previously had a blunt fringe/bangs for 2 years)
these girls sure look amazing with or without a middle part... anyway as for me: I'm wearing my hair in a side parting like forever and this is the only acceptable way for me :)
ReplyDeletebitterblondblog.blogspot.com
A do! I almost always wear a middle part. I tried a side part and my boyfriend tells me that when he first noticed me it looked like I was shy and hiding. He prefers the middle, but I guess I still got his attention!
ReplyDeleteI've had a middle part since two. I tried a side part once and it was painful.
ReplyDeleteThe middle part is the only way my hair will stay put and be nice. The fact that it is a trend is convinient, but trend or not I am destined to the middle part for life.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletei've always had a side part. someone once told me in my childhood that if you part your hair in the middle you accentuate your nose, if you part your hair on the side it accentuates your eyes. i would much rather have my eyes accentuated so it stuck! i'm not even sure if it's true.
ReplyDeleteI had a middle part when I was really little, but now I prefer a side part. I have side bangs anyway so it would look a bit strange if I tried a middle part. I do love the look on other girls though- Olivia Hussey especially; she's one of my all-time girl crushes too!
ReplyDeleteI think it's cute! Although, it reminds me of my high school hair-do... so I'm not sure that I can go back...
ReplyDeleteMiddle part AND dry shampoo all the way! My hair is long and slightly wavy with long layers so I can wear it parted in the middle or on the side. Only rarely do I wear it parted on the side - usually when I am dressed up. I just love the ease of the middle part. Before washing my face i spray dry shampoo and brush it out. Then I throw my hair in a bun on top of my head while I wash my face and put on my make up. When I am dressed, I take the bun out (hair naturally parts in the middle) and apply a finishing cream and I'm out the door. My fave dry shampoo is a drugstore brand called Psssst! It's from the 60's or 70's and works as well as Klorane (just doesn't smell as nice) and it is $6 a can. And the nozzle NEVER gets clogged which is a problem with a lot of dry shampoos.
ReplyDeletethank god the word "hair" showed up... middle part is new for me. (o:
ReplyDeleteOlivia Hussey was TOTALLY my girl crush too! She was so adorably sweet and innocent and I felt like she made the absolute perfect Juliet. I love that version!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely will be parting in the middle. For years I convinced myself that it made my face look really round and weird, but I recently got over myself and just started to rock it without a care. Now I switch it up, side part one day, middle part another - versatility! booyah!!
I've ALWAYS worn my hair like that. It's not just that I like it, I'm really starting to believe my hair was born parted in the middle (just like my front teeth, actually: it took me a surgery to keep them together)... So yeah! :D
ReplyDeleteI have a longish/oval face, and I find a middle part makes it look too long. A deep side part suits me better.
ReplyDeleteI don't really make a part at all, I just let it happen. Typically it falls near the center which I like the best for me. ;) xxoo A-
ReplyDeleteI had a middle part in middle school and ever since, I've not gone back. But then again, everyone looks a little dorky in middle school. My hair is too short to do it right now (growing out from a super short cut like) but I'd like to try it again sometime. I also loved Romeo and Juliet. What a fantastic film. She looks so innocent and fresh!
ReplyDeletei always use it like this lol
ReplyDeleteand i dont even need to esp. make it part,ih happens naturally, and if i try to make part differently it not look good on me,weird o.o
After years of not middle parting, I recently started up again because I want to wear my hear like that on my wedding day and it's in training :) I've always loved the look and thankfully it goes well with my style and face shape.
ReplyDeleteI too love the 1968 Romeo and Juliet. We watched it in 9th grade after we read the book, and I fell in love with Romeo! I think he looks like Zac Efron. So hot!
ReplyDeleteMiddle part. Love. I loved my middle part until my boyfriend told me that he thought I looked better with a side part, so I changed it - for him.
I always did a middle part when my hair was longer. Now that it's shorter (and I'm in the annoying growing out stage) I do a deep side part...it suits me better with the length of the cut but I miss my long hair..and parting it down the middle.
ReplyDeleteMy ex used to call it the Butt Cut. I can't take a haircut parted down the middle seriously anymore.
ReplyDeleteI adore a middle part, but alas my wicked cowlick demands that I part my hair on the side. Le sigh.
ReplyDeletewhen i was younger i would only wear my hair in the middle. then i flipped it on the side way to much. now its right in the sweet middle. i just love the middle part. its just extremely natural to me
ReplyDeleteI'm wearing the center part right now. What's wrong with variety? :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE that romeo and juliet! brings me back. center parts are great. depending on the situation, they can either be sweet and simple, or sleek and sexy.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely depends on the person. A center part looks amazing on someone like Olivia Hussey - the woman glows. Gwyneth, on the other hand, looks fine with a center part, but I feel she's better suited to a side part.
ReplyDeleteI did middle part when I was in high school lol. It really depends on the face shape I think.
ReplyDeleteIs that the girl from Love Story? I love that movie and I love her. I wish I could watch it right NOW! Middle part? I like it! I'll wear mine that way when my hair falls that way naturally. Its fun to wear a low ponytail and sport the middle part as well. I think wavy hair girls can definitely rock the middle part too!
ReplyDeleteI like to mix it up between middle and side part - it's a great way to hide dirty hair!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
mon amy
Yes! I recently started center-parting my hair and I love what a difference this little change makes. I pretty much pretend I'm in the 60s all the time. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the look of a middle part .... on anyone but me! I wish I could pull of this simple look but I just can't!! If I could I would though!
ReplyDeleteNO! I'm a big proponent of the side part. Most people's lives would be better if they went with a deeper side part! Tough to pull off the middle part.
ReplyDeleteOh no, no no no. I do not look good with a middle part, I'm a side parting kinda girl (although that Juliet girl is beaut)
ReplyDeleteI like this blog but I'm puzzled as to what makes a middle part fresh and new.
ReplyDeleteI think you definitely need a symmetrical face to pull it off. And to not slick down the hair too much...I've seen that too often. Give it a little life!
ReplyDeleteDO! 100% I started doing it cause its great while my bangs are growing out. I also just ran a fashion show and made all the models do it (they all kicked and screamed saying it didn't look good on them) but they all looked stunning! (And agreed with me after that it looked good.)
ReplyDeleteWell I have this massive cowlick in front so a middle part will never happen for me. haha
ReplyDeleteI tried the middle part once. My husband told me to stop it. Oh well. Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteDO!
ReplyDeletei've been wearing this lately, and did a lot last spring too! must be a spring-cleaning-up-look thing:)
i wear mine with teased and i guess it's more of a baby-middle part!
xoxo
OMG. Olivia is my girl crush too when I was a little kid. I was hoping to see other movies from her but have no clue. She is such a beauty.
ReplyDeletehttp://jamwordscrolls.blogspot.com/
i use to make middle part of my hair but not anymore, cause i realize i look ugly in middle part ..but htnx for the post
ReplyDeleteI went to a side part some time in high school but have been rocking a middle part again for at least 5 or so years. It works with the (lazy) messy/wavy hairstyle I generally wear :)
ReplyDeleteit looks great on some people but i think my cowlick would funk things up :) who knows...
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE those behind-the-scenes photos from Romeo and Juliet (one of my all-time favorites too). Where did you get them??
ReplyDeleteMy hair naturally parts in the center, so I tend to just let it be... I have an oval face, symmetrical except for slightly different eyebrows, and at the moment bra-length wavy hair, so it works. In fact, when my hair's long, a side part just looks kind of awkward. Though when I have a shorter haircut, I like sometimes parting it on the side, just for a change of pace. But it is longer at the moment, so middle-parted it is. Cool to be trendy, even accidentally! :)
ReplyDeletei hateeee middle parts... on me. period!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my blog:

I have very stong facial features and I part my hair in the middle. I think its all about the face, some pull middle parted hair but some don't. You just have to decide if you like it or not, don't part youre hair in the middle just because it's ''in style this season'' do it if you pull the hair parted in the middle look :)

ReplyDeleteI love the middle part, but I'm afraid to try it! Dry shampoo is a lifesaver. I keep a mini bottle in my cosmetic bag for a touch up anywhere. It works miracles!
ReplyDeletemy roommate and I were just having this conversation recently! I like the middle part when it's donewith a soft wavy style.
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, right now i have the perfect hair cut for a side part, but when i part my hair in the middle, I bear an uncanny resemblance to Tim Riggins. yes he's smokin hot, but not exactly my style icon.
My dad had a saying: Boys and girls and those-who-part-their-hair-in-the-middle. And ever since then I have parted my hair to the side...

I love those behind-the-scenes photos from the 60s Romeo & Juliet. I'd never seen them before. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhile some people hate the middle parting, I love it! I wear my hair like this often. Definitely a 'do' for me! x

I wish I didn't get a fringe cut. now I can't part my hair in the centre anymore :( I think center parts are so gorgeous with long hair.
ReplyDeleteThis just made my day!
ReplyDeleteI parted my hair in the middle through high school but it was the "in" thing to part it to the side for the past eight years or so. My hair always parts to the middle though. It's natural. Like a few other ladies I have a slight cowlick and no matter which side I part my hair there's a little strand that doesn't want to go any direction.
I'm thinking middle part and bangs this summer! I have to wait because I don't want bangs for my wedding photos so poo.
Thanks for making me rethink this! I'd love to go back to middle.
i wear a middle parting on a daily basis! i love how they actually shape your face better (slimmer!) x
ReplyDeletehttp://sydsense.blogspot.com
I actually ALWAYS prefer the side part. I think it's always more sultry and classy. Although, these women are pulling it off! :)
ReplyDeleteDitto on the teenage obsession with Romeo and Juliet and the Olivia hussey girl crush...you have made my day with these pictures. I just let my part fall where it may, which is a little off center right in front, then in the center the rest of the way. My hair is long and wavy so a natural beachy look suits it best, I guess.

ReplyDeleteI part my hair in the centre when it's curly, my hairdresser taught me to do it last time I was there and I love it :) usually it is straight and parted to one side.
ReplyDeleteI always like this look when I see it on other people, but when I try it on myself I find it looks poofy and ridiculous... I do have extremely thick hair so perhaps that is why.
ReplyDeleteSo I guess the answer to your question is no, but if I could pull it off then I would.
I'm a middle part girl. Always been, always will be. It's simple, I know... but I can't help it!
ReplyDeleteI definitely love the middle part and wear my hair that way several times a week! :) I am curious if you have any tips for dry shampoo. I have tried it but have not had much luck in that department.
ReplyDeletelove the middle part. Hate the my hair can't rock the middle part. So not fair. Always want what you can't have...
ReplyDeletefor once i am on trend! I have always wore a middle part.
ReplyDeleteSo funny that you mention this today. I parted my hair in the middle for no real reason just yesterday. At the time I thought, why am I doing this...but it looks cool, so I'll leave it. Now, I know it was the subtle flexes of a trend beginning. For once, I'm at the start, not the end of a trend. :)
ReplyDeleteYay, for the middle part trend! I've always had a middle part, my hair just naturally falls that way and it seems odd any other way - although I've tried. Particularly when I was younger and my brother and sister would tease me that I looked like Nana Mouskouri. (Not that I minded so much as I actually think she's got awesome style).

ReplyDeleteMiddle part is the only thing my hair does. Even when I had a fringe, it would middle part!
ReplyDeleteBack when I was a kid, middle parting was cool, then in got geeky in my teenage years and now in my twenties, its back!
ReplyDeleteI've been parting my hair in the middle since last year. Love it, especially slightly tousled.
for the longest time i had "side bangs" and about 3 years ago i reverted back to a middle part. for me, my hair is naturally wavy, so it just seems to fit.
ReplyDeleteWe share the same weird talent. But you would think that a good sense of direction would accompany that talent but I have a terrible sense of direction. I'm curious to know if that is the same for you or not? :) cheap prom dresses
