My friend Jenny is expecting her first baby (a little girl!) in September, but as her bump grew, she didn't know what to wear. So! Just for fun, we decided to do a little makeover...BEFORE:
"Since I work in fashion, it's my job to 'look the part,' " says Jenny, the senior fashion sales director of style website Refinery29. "But now that I'm pregnant, I have that moment every morning where I open my closet doors and just stare..." She was relying on flowy tops and leggings, but needed something more elegant for work.Happily, HATCH, the gorgeous maternity collection based in New York, offered Jenny three pretty pieces to round out her wardrobe, and the lovely Kelsey Foster took photos...
AFTER:
Here, Jenny wears the Afternoon Dress in navy. "I wear larger necklaces and jewelry now that I'm pregnant," she says, since they help balance out her bump. (Btw, how cool is it that she can bring her dog to work?!)
Here, Jenny wears the Dinner Party Dress in tan stripes. "Bright nail polish also makes me feel more pulled together when I'm pregnant," she says.
Finally, Jenny wears the ADORABLE jumper. How cute does she look?! She wore a chunky necklace and sky-high heels to make the look feel chic and grown-up. (Tip: She made her awesome bun with a rad bun donut! They come in small and large.)If you are pregnant (or have been), what did you like to wear? I wore the same blue V-neck every day. :)

she does look good, but wowzers the prices of those pieces is way too much for me! the gap has some nice maternity clothes at a more pedestrian price though.

ReplyDeleteDue August 4th! Only 19 days to go. I've been lucky and am all belly, so I could wear a lot of my own things for a long time. I did finally cave and get a pair of maternity skinny jeans around 5 months and I'm so glad I did.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise I think dresses are the best for a baby bump. You can find a lot of maxi, empire waist, and stretchy ones in your normal size/maybe a size up but allow for growth. I'm excited for our new arrival and to get back into my closet. Now I'm thinking about button downs and wrap dresses to make my wardrobe more nursing friendly.

ReplyDeleteHatch is to die for. Gosh I wish they were around when I was pregnant about 4 years ago (whoa was it really 4 years ago!)
I pretty much wore my normal clothes until the bump was too big, then relied on lots of knee length dresses as I was in the 3rd trimester during the Summer, I wore lots of cheap finds from the Gap & Old Navy so I didn't mind the many dribbles and spills as I got used to my growing belly! (gosh I was clumsy during pregnancy)
Next time around I will treat myself to a few really nice items (ones that can transition to post baby too!) because it's such a special time you should enjoy it and dress like you love it!

As I am pregnant now (2 more weeks to go...) I have been enjoying wearing some longer and wider shirts and leggings. I also found these super comfy maternity pants at H&M that are so comfy and good for even the warmer weather:)
Still- it is tough to find something nice looking and comfortable at the same time.
I write from Poland and I feel we're lacking in nice shops with maternity clothes (unless you're shopping online).
I would like to say: She was gorgeous before and did not need a makeover, but... those are some VERY nice Hatch pieces to add to an already stylish mama's wardrobe. Nice job, everybody! xo.

ReplyDeleteI know you only want nice comments but I do have a complaint with Hatch clothes. They are lovely and certainly investment pieces that tout to be 'Perfect for before, during and after pregnancy'. The issue is that most of the collection is comprised of dresses without any buttons or access for nursing (with the exception perhaps of the Airplane dress?). I'm on my second pregnancy and happily buy several of these lovely pieces if I thought after the baby came I'd be able to wear them out and nurse in public without disrobing. I'd love to see the company in future expand their range to keep this in mind.

ReplyDeleteHatch is lovely but way too expensive for me! I like stretchy dresses (non maternity) and now that I am on leave I live in the most comfortable maternity yoga pants. You know the kind you can pull up over your bump? Oh man they are so lovely. I only wear them indoors mind you...

ReplyDeletebecause of budget restrictions i am currently wearing a lot of maternity hand-me-downs which i feel super blessed to have. seeing these pictures make me a little sad though cause i would love to get a makeover!!! i really really really love that last outfit with the chunky necklace and the jumper ... sooo cute! i do have one outfit i refer to as my "with-child uniform" its black leggings, a dark green tank and this plaid shirt of husbands that has blue, green, red and brown (i think) the button up is really light weight so its nice for the summer. if its really hot, i just switch out the leggings for cut off jean shorts and im sure when it gets colder, ill just add boots :)

ReplyDeleteI was looking to pregnancy very much, to have a bump, etc., when nature surprised me with twins and I went from 125 lb (5.4 high) to 220lb. Looking like an elephant and no clothes could make me look better. I hid behind some stretchy yoga pants and JCrew Tshirts, that are very long and durable. Sigh. :) I hope one day to have a singleton and try out those beautiful clothes too! :)

ReplyDeleteI'm pregnant for the third (and last!) time and have always been in my last trimester during the hot months of summer, so I live for cotton dresses. They are far, far cooler and more comfortable than any kind of maternity pants/shorts. So easy and breezy!

Your lack of an appropriate response to this has been disappointing. You still haven't addressed the problem with the ramen noodle dishonesty, and furthermore, your comments in which you have responded have rung extremely false: "Thank you SO much for your feedback!! I love you guys. xoxo"
The problem is not that we want "to know exactly when/how things happen and know you can always trust what I write and how that all seemed confusing here," as you described it, but that you plagiarized yourself (and seemingly fabricated the situation; if you and your friends did have that conversation recently, I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't have brought up a Glamour post you did on that exact subject). Let's remember, a New Yorker writer was recently caught self-plagiarizing. This lifestyle blog obviously is not an established magazine with those standards, but certain ethical lines inherent in an ostensibly journalistic effort should not be crossed.
Interestingly, the readers expressing why this has upset them have been far more articulate and intelligent than the readers shouting in your defense, "haters." And, frankly, far more articulate than you have been on the issue.
Does this affect you? I hope to see you address this with a full—and self-aware—post in the coming days.

ReplyDeleteI'm about 5 months pregnant right now with my second. I jumped straight into maternity pants/shorts with my first pregnancy, but this time around, I've just been wearing my postpartum shorts/jeans from the after the first pregnancy and its still working so far! I'm lacking in curves when not pregnant, so when I AM pregnant, another alternative has been to buy regular bottoms in the "curvy" version a size or two up that I actually now fill out. :) All these "size-up" pants/shorts from postpartum were bought second-hand since I knew I wouldn't need them once my hips went back to their non-curvy selves, so its been nice to get a second use out of them. :) Also, Target and Old Navy have cotton stretchy "fold-over" waist skirts that I've been living in and will transition beautifully post-pregnancy too!

For those not wanting to spend major bucks on maternity duds but want something nicer and higher quality than Old Navy or Target, Japanese Weekend was my savior. They have fantastic nursing wear and are the only clothes that have lasted me through two pregnancies. The Hatch clothes are beautiful as is the mom to be modeling them!

I wore combat boots and a camouflage uniform every day, and you don't know a challenge until you try to bend over and get your boots bloused (end of pants put into combat boots) when you are nine months pregnant. i am not due till november so the bump is just beginning to appear and so far dresses and a couple pairs of maternity trousers are my saviour everything else is just from my normal wardrobe--although the growing pile on the floor of clothes that don't fit at the moment is getting slightly depressing ;)

ReplyDeleteI lived in stretchy clothes from White House Black Market and jeans from Target. And sandals only - I would have toppled over in heels!
Rita and Kristen, I didn't have a lot of luck using a rolled up sock--it would slip out of my hair! The bun donut works much better. I got one at H&M for only $3 or $4 that is pretty much identical to this one! I think the fact that it's a foam sort of material makes it more grippy and easy to cover.

Leggings everyday for me with cute boots (i might of purchased A LOT of shoes during when I was preggo) and a longer, tighter fitting shirt for me. No point in hiding the obvious, plus I was proud of the bump=it was my summer project.

Also, who puts a very pregnant lady in what this website admits are "sky high heels." I'm sorry, but I think this is ridiculous and I will not be heeding this advice as I grow larger. Joanna, I wonder what you'll think of that blue shirt the second time around. I had almost a visceral reaction to putting on maternity clothes I wore for my first pregnancy. It's like my body could remember what it was like wearing them for 3 months straight! I ended up getting a lot of new stuff because I couldn't stand them. And my pregnancies were even 3 years apart. That alone makes me balk at expensive maternity clothes. If I was going to wear it three times I could see the investment, but once? Forget it!

But when it started getting HOT here - like in March (what the...?) - I needed more summery things and three words have saved me: Old. Navy. Dresses. Oh, and flip flops and adjustable sandals to accommodate swelling. :/

I love other girls in Hatch, but I'm petite and Hatch wasn't fitted enough for me - despite the beautiful colors and fabrics, I looked like I was wearing sacks! Isabella Oliver has been my absolute favorite. It's also pricey, but they have fantastic sales (including one right now). The clothes have made me feel amazing at every stage, they really do grow with you, they look fabulous without putting any thought into it and they'll be perfect for 4th trimester too. The brand has been a lifesaver!

Now, on to all of the great questions asked on this post:
* Dog: Bodhi is a labradoodle pup, just 9 months old and simply delicious.
* Brown boots: Chloe, bought at my favorite vintage store in Soho for a steal! Ina is on Thompson between Spring & Prince.
* Red necklace worn with Jumper: This is my mom's from the 1970s. Vintage, again :)
* Purple T-strap heels worn with Jumper: prada, and actually incredibly comfortable!
* A note on heels in general: I'm living in flip flops/flats these days BUT I do keep heels at the office for client meetings and such. Adds a touch of glamour that I still love.
* Bra: Strapless from Chantelle - the best maternity investment of the summer as I wear it every day with my maxi dresses.
* Bun: I have used both the bun donut and sock (with toes cut off). They both work well for me, but I may have a slightly different technique than most. First tip: day 2 hair always works best. Second tip: I start with my hair high up on my head in a pony tail. Then I loop the pony tail through the donut bun/rolled sock and fan my hair around it so you can't see the fabric. Last, I start bobby-pinning on an angle, keeping it a bit loose but all locked into place.

ReplyDeleteAs a gal planning to get pregnant soon, I couldn't find a way to work my two tone dyed hair. It is now from light brown to golden blonde to the ends. And my original hair color is dark dark brown, which shows in two weeks after getting my roots done.
ReplyDeleteI've just read that long dark roots is a trend now, but unfortunately this trend wouldn't be working for my formal work environment.I thought of it, but, no.
Is there a healthy way for hiding long dark roots? For 9 months or so? Without getting depressed from the look in the mirror? :) Or should I get back to my original hair color?

ReplyDeleteHave to admit, I was so excited when I saw the title of this post in Google Reader, but I did think, "I hope it's not more Hatch stuff." Don't get me wrong, their collection is absolutely gorgeous and I've been coveting a few pieces, but there is absolutely no way I (or most of us) could afford them. I like to dream as much as the next lady, but it would be wonderful to see a feature that addressed more attainable options. Your friend looks amazing, btw :)
