As you may have noticed, A Cup of Jo stayed up last night and got a makeover! Two months ago, I asked you which of four redesigns you preferred and loved hearing your feedback. We've been working hard all summer, and you're looking at the final result!You know when you get a haircut and look in the mirror and don't recognize yourself at first? That's sort of how I feel today, ha. But I am thrilled with how much cleaner the blog looks, and the header tabs are my favorite part. (Take a look above!)
On that note, HUGE thanks to the design firm Apartment One and the programmer Jay Johnson, with collaboration from Elihu Bogan. They were incredible to work with, and I'd highly recommend them all.

ReplyDeleteLooks great! Congratulations on making the switch. Just one small observation: looks like the header tabs are a bit wonky, with "Motherhood" hanging out all by herself on the end. Same with the About Me, Contact, FAQ tabs. That's all. Otherwise – beautiful!

I want to like it - I do, but I find the huge ads distracting, especially the one right under your header! I completely understand that advertising is the machine that keeps you in business, but I feel it takes something away from your brand. Gah, I hate to be negative about other people's design work - it's too easy to critisize, but it feels wrong that I'm staring at a car advert that's bigger than your head!

The redesign looks really lovely, but that big blinking/sliding/animated ad smack bang at the top puts me off spending anytime on the blog. Love the new design! Especially the thumbnails when you click on a header. One thought, the title and header tabs take up about half the browser window - maybe if you can make them a little smaller we could see more content when we first visit Cup of Jo. It's nice to see a full photo, rather than the post title and the top third of the picture when the blog first loads.

looks great! fresh and clean. all is aligning well over here on Safari on a Mac. my only critique would be the banner ad-- I know you need to have it, I just think it would look better at the very top of the page, above your header, instead of right below it. otherwise, wonderful! I'd been dying to see which design you would choose! :)

On my Mac (using Firefox), the tabs at the top aren't spaced properly...'Weddings & Relationships' overlaps on top of 'Motherhood'. Same issue in the author's box, the 'Contact' tab is on top of the 'FAQ' tab.

I think it looks beautiful and is a great improvement... that ad header kinda wrecks it though. a little jarring. i get it's sort of a necessary evil... maybe turn it into a footer? or place it above everything?

A few things to consider:-
there's a big block of empty space between the header and where the posts start, that seems a little jarring.
I do agree with the comment about the adverts being a bit visually distracting. Maybe move them down and bring the 'let's hang out' up (under the about me).
Otherwise, hurrah on the new-ness!

When I click on either the About, Contact, or FAQ link on the main page, and it brings to me those parts, on THAT page, on the right side the ads cover up the "Contact" and "Praise" titles. Not the "FAQ" title - but that is probably because its such a short word. I realize it may be a browser issue, so FYI: I am on a mac, using Firefox.

ReplyDeleteIt looks sweet and clean, and welcoming, except for the wide ad right under the header - these prominent banners have caused me to avoid daily visits to several sites, including design*sponge. I can handle ads on the sidebar, but ads competing with the header just rile me. :-S

It looks nice! The only thing I don't like is the banner advertising across the top. Is there a way to move it to below the first post? It seems so intrusive and off-brand, especially if it's one of those animated ones.

ReplyDeleteHi Jo, been reading for awhile and love your blog, but I have to tell you that the ad banner between your header and the blog post feels invasive. Of course you have a right to make money off this blog, but there seem to be bigger, flashier ads in your face now, which is disappointing. Check out capitol hill style - she has an ad banner at the very top which is much more understated.

ReplyDeleteOne small thing right off the top for me (using Safari as my browser on a Mac and a few people mentioned it) - the headings under the top banner are wonky for me. So they all line up except for "Motherhood" which is a step down and won't activate the link.
Just a small thing. I'm sure after a few days up and running you'll get it all smoothed out!
I like that you kept the loveliness of your original header, the colouring is pretty and the search organization is great. I am not, however, a fan of the large ad right at the top. I find it very invasive and off-putting; just my own opinion...

ReplyDeletelove the typeface used on the header but i must agree with the other comments that have objected to the large animated advert underneath the header. it just adds a too many colours and typefaces to the layout. it must be a tricky line to walk as i know this blog is a source of income for you but i feel the size and positioning of that ad make it intrusive.

ReplyDeletei'm not one to comment usually but I like the clean, black and white design. However, as most said, the ads are so colorful and large that they are now the focus. I come to read content, not have my eyes go right to the ads. Just seems to be a bit much.. I prefer the old design because of this.

I respect that this is your job and the ads are what keeps the blog alive, but it's sort of disappointing that when your blog 'opens' the first thing I see is an ugly ad for chicken fajitas instead of your pretty header.

I haven't read the other comments so I might be repeating but here is my two cents:
ReplyDelete- The new design is simple, elegant and beautiful. I love the tabs at the top for different types of content.
-I am using Safari Version 6. and the Motherhood tab at the top is underneath and to the side of the Weddings and Relationships Tabs. The rest of the tabs look correct but like there isn't enough room for the Motherhood tab.
-Also, I found the two animated ads (the top bar and side box) are very distracting and attention grabbing and ruin the effort you've made at redesigning the website. The ads I'm seeing are bright red and totally clash with your design. One thing I enjoyed about your old design was not looking at these kinds of tacky, annoying, animated ads that you see just about everywhere else on the web. Good luck with the tweaks. if you have any say I would drop the animation and be more choosey in what they look like. (I know it might not be possible since you use the ads for revenue.)
It looks modern and sophisticated, great job! The adverts don't bother me so much- my eye goes straight to your beautiful header. Congrats!

ReplyDeleteLove the new design!! My only comment would be that the ad banner looked better below your Cup of Jo header. It doesn't stand out as much when the background is white. Seems to stand out sooo much more now that you've moved it up...I looked at your blog earlier today too.

ReplyDeleteI love your blog and am a long time reader. Well done on your makeover - it was the one I had picked! I would just like to reiterate on what many other comments have mentioned. Design is my background and I feel strongly that your blog header is your brand - and with any sort of banner ad there competing with it - I believe it is weakening or compromising your brand. It kind of projects a message that you have sold out. I too understand that at this point your blog is in a position to generate good revenue - however the way it is now it seems a bit at odds with who you are and what you're about. I am looking at your lovely colour scheme and image - but I am totally distracted by a bright blue trashy looking ebay ad. I hope this doesnt sound too harsh and I'm sure everyone thinks they're an expert - but I think in the long run this could be a bit detrimental.

The new layout is quite darling but it'll definitely take me a little while to get used to it.
I'm really liking the soft peachy background color as well as the use of circles throughout. So cute!
One thing I would like to point out that has already been raised in the comments is the ad banner at the top of your blog. That was the first thing I saw and it diverted my attention from your new blog look!

ReplyDeletelove it! definitely a lovely fresh appeal. just one thing i'd change if i were you - under your little bio where it says About Me, I'd probably remove the 'me' part because it's not letting the tabs flow very well. i am such a freak about everything lining up perfectly haha

My comments are same as others have said...
1) The "MOTHERHOOD" tab is broken, hangs below and to the right of the Weddings/Relationships tab and is not a clickable link...therefore I cannot access the Motherhood tab at all :(
2) The ABOUT ME, CONTACT & FAQ tabs are not evenly spaced and I find the ABOUT ME tab confusing/distracting as the words are split onto separate lines
FYI both of these issues happen on both my work computer (Mac desktop running Safari) and home computer (13 in Macbook laptop running Safari).

ReplyDeleteLooks great, love new colours but the motherhood tab seems to be sat on navigation bottom holding line & slightly below weddings & relationships. The balloon also looks like it is floating away from the 'f' a bit too much. I'm viewing it on my iPhone.

ReplyDeleteI really love the redesign, specially because it looks really clean and "uncluttered". I also love the famous posts option. However, the "motherhood" header appears under the wedding&relationships for me. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with me using safari & mac; but all the team that worked on it deserves congratulations :)

hmm, i think i like the makeover! maybe i don't like change though and it will grow on me. your site before was so approachable, like a magazine - I could see your sponsors up front, the little blurb about you, etc...this takes a little bit more work and seems to look like most other blogs :( the two huge ads before your sponsors or social media buttons are also not that pretty. also, similar to other commenters, the top ad is jarring. I'm surprised at the kinks with how much you must have worked on and paid for this site!

ReplyDeletePerhaps I am just resistant to change, but I really did love your old layout, sniff sniff. Your new layout isn't so wildly different from your old so I will definitely get used to it, but the ad at the top is jarring. Either way, you blog is amazing, your posts are inspiring and I am a devoted reader~
