Have a great weekend.

This Tuesday evening, Toby and I were at home minding our own business, when Alex went to a work party and met Robert De Niro! The actor is generally considered gruff and unapproachable, but Alex said he was friendlier than he had expected. "He was also shorter than me, which was good news," Alex told me. Haha. Hope you have a good weekend, and here are a few fun posts from around the web...

What hearing loss sounds like. Fascinating.

29 potato recipes.

The power of talking to your baby.

Go, Mindy!

Small flowers go a long way.

Cool ways to see the world.

This perfume sounds wonderful.

My friend's parenting story made me laugh.

Braids for springtime.

How to eat fruits.

This relationships book looks intriguing.

Excited man only two therapy sessions away from resolving issues.

Hope you have a good weekend, and our thoughts are with everyone in Boston. What an insane situation. Hang in there!

i couldn't recommend You Just Don't Understand more. I read it in college for human ethology (anthro) class, and since then it's remained on my bookshelf and has helped my relationships so much! It's fascinating besides.

Joanna, “Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children” is such a powerful book. It was the very first book I read for college and made such an impact on me--even when I babysat, I found myself trying to explain myself and describe everything around us more. It's so important to a baby's formative years!

Oh, and "You Just Don't Understand" is also really great!

Ooh la la. I'm in the market for a new perfume! That one looks delightful.

Also, Robert de Niro? Nice!

Joanna! Thanks so much for sharing an article on the vocabulary gap. I used to teach pre-k in a low-income area and it was pretty drastic.

Funny, I had to read that Deborah Tannen book in my Intro to Communication Studies course my freshman year at UCLA.

Just wanted to say I always look forward to your friday links... and that when the page loaded and I only saw hairline I knew it was Robert DeNiro, or "Bobby D" as I once saw his autograph signed in a restaurant in Little Italy. Have a lovely weekend!

Oh god, I love The Onion. So awesome every single time (especially this week "covering" the Boston events <- can I get away with that if I'm a Massachusetts-raised/ Boston loving girl?)

So many good links this week, Joanna! The hearing loss sound clips are TRIPPY, that New York Taught Me blog post is damn funny, and Alex's articles are always so well written. What a cool pair of talented writers Toby and soon-to-arrive baby have.
Enjoy a beautiful weekend!

My Goodness, De Niro? That picture is awesome btw. Did Alex talk to him directly? Did he shake his hand? (Can you tell I'm a fan?)

"You just don;t understand" is an amazing book! Deborah Tannen is such a talented writer. Another great one by Deborah is " You're wearing that?" a book about conversations between mothers and daughters!

I loved that NPR article because I'm forever having to explain to people the difference between hearing and understanding. People think because I respond to the sound of their voice, that it means I understood what they said but really, all they did was get my attention, and I have to ask again what they said...

Can't believe your husband met Bob! how cool is that?!

And we're all thinking of Boston in London- I went to cheer on the marathon runners yesterdays and every single person with an American flag got a huge cheer. things seem a bit better now but the scars stay long after

Thanks for sharing that NPR article about what hearing loss sounds like! I always look forward to your Friday links for great finds around the web, and reading through/hearing that NPR post was really informative. My mom has progressive hearing loss, and learning more about it always helps me understand what she is going through better.

I also appreciate the hearing loss link. I think it's important for people to get educated about taking care of their hearing and learning what options are available to them. I can't wait for the day when hearing aids are viewed like glasses, an everyday and sometimes fashionable accessory.

First time commenting on your blog, but definitely not the first time reading it! I always look forward to your weekend list of links... Just wanted to note that Deborah Tannen's relationship book is definitely very interesting and a worthwhile read! I was required to read it in a general communications class at UCLA and many of its lessons have stuck with me years later down the line! Check it out and keep up the great work :)
